Norton immigrants to America from York

Richard Norton was the eldest son and heir of John Conyers (alias Norton) Esq. He was one of the council for the North during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward the VI. Governor of Norham Castle under Mary, and in 1568-69 was sheriff of Yorkshire under Queen Elizabeth. But in 1569 he joined in an insurrection with Charles Neville, Earl of Westmorland, Thomas Percy, Earl of North Umberland, and many others in the north of England, who published a manifesto declaring:

"That they took up arms with no other design than to restore the religion of their ancestors, to remove evil counsellors fromt eh Queen, to restore the Duke of Norfolk and other faithfull peers, who were confined and deprived of their honours- totheir liberty and the Queen's favors: and that they attempted nothing against the Queen, to whom they vowed a most constant fidelity and affection."

Queen Elizabeth was not amused. Her forces soon suppressed the rebellion and eight of the Nortons were convicted of High Treason. Of these Richard Norton and his sons Christopher (executed at Tyburn, 27 May, 1570), Marmaduke and Thomas along with some of his brothers were attained. "Christopher and his father's brother having been captured proved themselves steadfast Catholics, were hanged, disemboweled, and quartered. Edmund, who apostatized, and a sister are the subject of Wordsworth's "White Doe of Rylstone"." Catholic Encyclopedia

This became the impetus for the NOrton family to emigrate to the American Colonies.

Below I have built a table showing only the sons and daughters of Richrad and William Norton who emigrated.
