She was born 1652. Marriage: 1680, Carlow, Ireland "Jane
Grimes daughter of Bethel and Catherine Grimes married William
Rose in 1654." "Jane Rose widow of Wm. Rose died 1670
married Edward Norton 1680. These records also showed that Jane
Grimes had a sister Sarah. (marriage records for Carlow Co.

"I found Mary and Edward Norton in an old Irish Quaker Immigration
book and they came from the same area in Ireland as my Blackburn
family. They were in the Nottingham Monthly Meetings in Cecil
County Maryland and they both married into the William Brown family
of Nottingham in 1733 and 1739. The book says they came from "ye
City and Parish of Armagh" and were the children of Edward
Norton. My Blackburn family went on to Pennsylvania.

I have been revisiting the book about the descendants of Messer Norton 1750-1800. "Edward and Elizabeth Norton moved to North Carolina in 1762, noted on Quaker records of transfer as Edward and wife Elizabeth and five minor children. Their oldest children, Willam and margaret, received separate transfers. They moved to Rowan County, North Carolina, which became Guilford County in 1770, and present day Randolph County in 1778, attending first the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, then New Garden Monthly Meeting, then Center Monthly Meetins as the membership was split up with increasing memgers. On 13 September 1778 Edward Norton died and was buried at Providence Cemetery. He left a will which was probated in Randolph County, NC, although the will says he lived in Guilford County. This is due to the formation of Randolph County from Guilford County in 1778, as all three sons are listed on the Land Tax Lists for Randolph County in 1779. ....will was probated 9 September 1782 and then Elizabeth Norton of Randolph County was married a second time, 20 November 1782, to Thomas Branson. On September 28, 1791 Elizabeth Branson died and is probably buried in Randolph County. The children of Edward and Elizabeth Norton numbered at least seven from the Quaker records. We have names for only six from Edward's will.
William and Margaret are undoubtedly the two oldest, and Mary and Edward are probably the youngest. Messer and Elizabeth come in between. The seventh may be Richard as there is a Richard Norton mentioned as being disowned on 31 March 1770, in the New Garden Monthly Meeting, Guilford County, where Edward's family was worshiping at the time. It is possible that the seventh child died and was therefore not named in the will"......the author goes on to tell who each child married and where they eventually settled......then this:
"Edward Norton was born about 1760 or later and is listed as "single" on the 1779 tax list for Randolph County, NC. This may be the same Edward who is listed as living in 1812 in Franklin Co, TN, along with William Norton, son of Mercer, both on the tax list."
RE: your question regarding the copy of Edward's will being in the Lawrence County Archives....we know that Edward Norton who died in Franklin County, TN in 1817 was married to Nellie and she and her children settled in Lawrence County in 1819 when land became available for white settlement. Could the author of the Mercer Norton 1750-1800 book have been correct is her guess that this Edward Norton was the son of the original Edward Norton and Elizabeth Brown? |
